Susanne Howlett, known as Susanna Howlett, is an occupational therapist in private practice providing psychotherapy and counselling services, professional supervision and group facilitation. The focus of her work is assisting people to strengthen their sense of self, explore the pattern of their personal or work relationships and clarify meaning and purpose in their life.

Counselling and Psychotherapy

Susanna works with people seeking assistance with difficulties such as anxiety, depression, panic attacks, traumatic stress, sexual abuse recovery, identity confusion, shyness, self harm, addictions and self-sabotaging habits. As well she assists people managing times of life when challenges are overwhelming such as physical illness and injury recovery, stressful work place dynamics or migration stresses. Susanna offers preventative therapy for those with life transitions, parenting/carer challenges and conflicted relationships or sense of self. She also assists those who want to understand their own personal or work functioning to deepen reflectiveness and vitality in living life more fully.

Private Health Insurance rebates for occupational therapy may apply. Medicare rebates with referral by a general practitioner for occupational therapy under the Better Access Mental Health Care Plan may apply. This involves reporting requirements.

Professional Supervision

Susanna provides reflective professional supervision including clinical supervision, for a range of professional people. These include psychotherapists, counsellors, group facilitators, managers, and educators as well as occupational therapists, general practitioners, nurses and social workers. Supervision provides a reflective space which assists practitioners to develop skills, knowledge and wisdom as they engage thoughtfully with the challenges and complexity of professional practice.

Professional Training

Use of Mindfulness in Counselling. Susanna has recently conducted training workshops for counsellors in Singapore: See the flyer in the articles section.
Reflective Group for Supervisors. A series of 1 1/2 hour monthly sessions for professional supervisors in a small group which is undertaken in six-month blocks. This group is a space for supervisors to reflect on issues that arise in the provision of supervision: to think about the work, to identify the dynamics at play, to formulate new responses and develop in the role of supervisor.

Professional Background

Susanna Howlett has 44 years experience working in the area of mental and psychosocial health, initially in New Zealand and since 1976, Western Australia. She qualified as an occupational therapist in 1966. Susanna is a certified psychodramatist (1979) and a graduate of the Hakomi Psychotherapy Training Course (mindfulness based psychotherapy) (2005). She has integrated these approaches into her occupational therapy services. She has 13 years teaching experience as a lecturer and senior lecturer in the New Zealand and Western Australian Schools of Occupational Therapy before establishing her private practice at The Wasley Institute 24 years ago. Susanna conducted psychotherapy groups as an occupational therapist at a private psychiatric hospital in WA for fifteen years.

Susanna has conducted a wide range of professional development workshops over many years for education and health professionals in the area of psychosocial health: stress management and resilience, self awareness, communication and counselling skills, group facilitation, leadership, work team reflection and colleageal peer support.

For ten years Susanna Howlett was director of the Groupwork Leadership Training Course; for four years the co-ordinator of the Yorgum Aboriginal Womens Counselling Training Course and a supervisor in the Advanced Counselling Training Course at The Wasley Institute. Susanna has contributed to the groupwork and personal development units in the Masters in Counselling course at Edith Cowan University both in Perth and Singapore; she conducted self awareness units in the Masters in Counselling, Human Services at Curtin University of Technology. Susanna was a trainer in the Psychodrama Training Institute of Western Australia for 16 years. Susanna was the editor of the PACAWA Newsletter for four years 2006 - 2010. See articles section.
